Once framed for a murder he did not commit, Mohan Kumar nonetheless loses all of his free wills, then he comes out of prison empowered, determined, and ready to exact revenge on anyone who gets near him. The movie "Ki Duniya" is based on the true story of this extraordinary man. Playing the role of a character similar to the one portrayed by Robert DeNiro in the movie, Kumar delivers a rugged, compelling performance as a character who is as effective as terrifying. With the Oscar buzz creating a buzz around the movie, what does this mean for Kumar's next film? Read on to find out.
It's easy to assume that Kumar's next movie will be about another murder mystery set in the English countryside. However, a quick look at the movie's plot - and an even quicker look at its plot summary on the movie's website don't hint at much, despite some rather vivid colour descriptions. The film, instead, revolves around the murder of a woman in a small English town named Sarah (Rooney Mara). Although the local newspaper reports give detailed descriptions of the murder and the suspects, no further details are given beyond those provided by the police. This means we do not know how old Sarah is or why she would be killed. However, some people speculate that her death may have something to do with her marriage to a much older man (played by Jason Statham), described as a heavy drinker and abusive to her in the past.
Based on a novel of the same name, "Ki Duniya" is yet another mini-budget movie directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The movie's website features a lot of information about the film, most of which is repeated on the movie's official website. The movie includes a deleted scene, which you can find on the website, which shows Sarah (Rooney Mara) lying on a bed in an opium-induced haze as she kills a drug dealer with a shot to the head. The site also includes cast details, including the movie's two lead characters, Ki Duniya (Koena Sheikh) and Naveen Kadhimi (Rajya Raje). According to the movie's producer, Ki Duniya is a Mumbai cop whose life has been made complicated by his love for Naveen, a Hyderabad girl whom he married but had a falling out with several years ago. However, their married life is coming back to normal, if not for a bit of tension and friction between them.
A Mumbai cop and his girlfriend are thrust into a world of trouble when they discover that their neighbour's, a gang of pirates, have stolen a rare DVD from a tourist company. The cops soon find that the man behind the theft was a movie director named Ki Duniya, who lives a rather close to self-imposed exile in Dubai. The film ends with the pair travelling to Dubai to help him apprehend the pirates, only to find that the city's liberal laws do not allow the police to arrest their suspects unless they are in the country for business purposes. This forces Ki Duniya to make a last-ditch attempt at piracy by putting Naveen on trial for piracy, something the director fears would lead to the collapse of the Indian film industry.
But that is not all! When the movie seems all set to be about to roll across screens, a mysterious stranger contacts both its leading characters, asking them to stop the release of the film. What does Naveen do? Will he stand up to the threat of violence from the piracy gang, or will he cave in and allow the movie to be released anyway? Answers to these questions and others like them are waiting for viewers to venture out to the theatres this weekend, ready to pick up a copy of the movie that just hit the screens - The Pirate's Apprentice.
